US Airways Group announced that to complete its restructuring initiatives and obtain cost-savings from some of our aircraft lessors and financiers as a means of ensuring the Company's return to profitability, the Company and certain of its subsidiaries, including US Airways, PSA Airlines, Allegheny Airlines, Piedmont Airlines, MidAtlantic Airways, US Airways Sales and Leasing and Material Services Company, filed voluntary petitions for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code. The Company expects that a restructuring under court supervision would be accomplished on a "fast-track" basis and have targeted emergence from Chapter 11 in the first quarter of 2003. The Company has adequate cash resources to fund our business during the restructuring period. US Airways has secured commitments for $500 million in debtor-in-possession (DIP) financing from a group of institutions led by Credit Suisse First Boston and Bank of America Corp., with participation from Texas Pacific Group, among others.

USAirways is cutting back service out of the Burlington Airport. The struggling airline is replacing the large jets with smaller ones. That means fewer seats available for travelers. USAirways currently has a mix of makes and models of planes coming in and out of Burlington. But one big model is going away. USAirways told Channel 3 News Monday that the airline will no longer fly 737s in and out of Burlington. The big jets will be replaced by regional jets and turbo props. 737s hold 120 passengers. The most people you can get on the smaller jets and turbo props is 50. USAirways says it is making the change for economic reasons. "We are not filling the larger jets," a company spokesperson told Channel 3 News Monday afternoon. Click here to read more.

A crack in the windshield of a USAirways passenger jet forced a phase five emergency landing this afternoon at the Burlington International Airport. The plane took off from the Burlington Airport and was en route to New York's LaGuardia Airport when the crack formed in mid-air. Passengers aboard the plane complained of a minor popping sensation in their ears, but they say tension aboard the plane was kept to a minimum. "People were calm on the plane, and they gave us the information that they needed to give us at the time," passenger Patricia Cummings told Channel 3 News. U.S. Airways worked to get the displaced passengers re-routed on alternate flights. Jack Thurston - Channel 3 News
