Burlington International Airport is introducing a new baggage
screening device to increase security for travelers and the aiport screeners.
Still in its experimental phase at the airport, the device is a tiny cloth with electronic trace detectors. Screeners will use them to inspect bags. The devices can also pick up simple traces of suspicious material.
Continental Airlines will use the first machine. The airline will then add more staff to man 11 more machines.
"It picks up residue to the value of a (billionth) of a gram. That's the equivalent of cutting a gram of salt into a thousand pieces," said Nigel Spackman of Burlington International Airport. "So it's a very serious piece of equipment."
Airport officials say certain houusehold chemicals may set off the machine.

Airlines To Screen Checked Baggage
In the post-September 11th world of air travel, strict security rules mean different things to different passengers. Come this Friday, another aviation security measure goes into effect.
Under the law airlines must screen checked baggage for explosives. The FAA has outlined four ways they can do that: with bomb sniffing dogs, through expensive X-ray machines, by manual search or by bag matching. "In other words every bag will be accounted for and every bag will be matched with a passenger, if passenger Jones does not get on a flight, his bag is not getting on the flight," said Art Vigil, the Continental Airlines manager at the Burlington Airport.
He says airlines in Burlington have chosen the bag matching method because the other ways are just not feasible. ... major delays are not expected in Burlington.
AirTran Airways, the nation's 10th largest carrier,
AirTran Airways, the nation's 10th largest carrier, said it plans to launch jet service to Burlington starting May 21.
AirTran Vice-President Tad Hutcheson joined U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, Gov. Jim Douglas and local officials for the announcement Friday afternoon.
Hutcheson said AirTran will use new Boeing 717 and 737 jets, flying three flights daily to the carrier's hub at Baltimore-Washington airport. Fares will start at one-way in coach, with business class seating available on every Burlington flight. He said passengers may connect in Baltimore to flights to nine Florida cities, to Atlanta or a range of destinations on the West Coast.
Burlington's effort to lure AirTran took six years, airport officials said, convinced greater competition would drive down fares.

Almost half of the baggage screeners at Burlington
International Airport may be losing their jobs. The Transportation Security Administration says 41 of the 97 screeners in Burlington will be let go because of federal budget cuts.
Monday morning screeners at overstaffed airports like Burlington will be given the opportunity to transfer to hard-to-staff airports in remote areas like Alaska. The rest, many hired just nine or ten months ago, will lose their jobs.

As WCAX News first reported Thursday, the low-fare airline AirTran
is coming to Burlington. It means more competition and lower fares across the board-- as well as a major boost for Vermont tourism and business.
There's plenty to celebrate, since AirTran Airways is one of a handful of airlines that's adding destinations right now, given a slowing economy. Vermont political and business leaders worked hard to persuade AirTran that Burlington would be good for them.
... AirTran begins three flights daily between Burlington and Baltimore-Washington airport on May 21st -- with fares ranging between and one-way. Although airline fares tend to rise and fall with demand, the addition of another carrier is expected to moderate the fares charged by other airlines.

Northeast flights to improve
Continental Connection plans to revamp routes in and out of Burlington International Airport to make travel more convenient to other northeastern cities.
Starting Feb. 25, Burlington travelers on Continental Connection to a dozen cities will go through Albany, N.Y. The new hub
and spoke configuration will make connections smoother and faster, said John Sullivan, chief executive officer of Commutair, the Plattsburgh, N.Y.-based regional airline that operates the Continental Connection franchise.
"There's always been commuter flying around the Northeast," Sullivan said. "There's never been a comprehensive system designed to connect cities in the Northeast to one another."
Promotional fares will start at each way to cities including Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo and White Plains, Sullivan said.
Tips for Travelers Taking to the Skies
The snow flakes are falling and passengers are packing heavy parcels. That means the holiday season has landed at the Burlington Airport. This year increased security post September 11th means travelers bearing gifts must come prepared. ... Art Vigil of Continental Airlines says in the gift-giving season travelers should not wrap any presents that will be carried on and they should plan for delays in the security check lines. ... The FAA rules say only three pieces of luggage are allowed per person and only two can be carried on. ... And if you plan on bringing holiday loot back home with you experts suggest you pack light to leave room for the return flight. The more items you can check, the less likely you'll face questions from security. Or if you don't want to lug your loot with you through an airport another option is to ship holiday bundles ahead of time.

US Airways flies more flights per day out of the Burlington
International Airport than any other airline serving the airport. Any schedule changes could have a major impact on the local airport.
... The bankrupt airline offers 14 flights a day from Burlington to New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and Pittsburgh. Service to Boston was canceled in June.
The airline accounted for 35 percent of the passengers who boarded planes in Burlington for the first half of this year. US Airways spokesman David Castelveter said no changes have been made in the airline's schedule.
Castelveter said it was too early to say whether there would be any schedule changes at Burlington.
For the first six months of the year, 91,527 passengers boarded US Airways flights at the Burlington airport. United was the second busiest airline with 50,588 passengers for the same period.
US Airways plan to reduce the number of seats on its flights
from Burlington to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh by 60 percent early next year when the airline switches from Boeing 737s to regional jets on the route.
The change is scheduled to take effect Feb. 9, just as the busy winter travel season heats up.
The airline plans to replace five 126-seat Boeing 737 aircraft with 50-seat regional jets, said US Airways spokesman David Caselveter.
... Currently, US Airways flies direct to Pittsburgh twice a day and direct to Philadelphia three times a day, said airline spokeswoman Amy Kudwa. The airline also flies from Burlington International Airport to Reagan National Airport serving Washington, D.C., and LaGuardia Airport in New York City using turbo prop planes. Service to Boston was dropped in June.
US Airways accounted for 35 percent of the passenger traffic out of Burlington for the first half of this year, making the airline the top carrier at the airport. United was the second busiest airline.
US Airways, crippled by the Sept. 11 attacks and burdened
by high costs, filed Sunday for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, the first major carrier to do so since the attacks.
The nation's sixth-largest airline, US Airways said that it had arranged financing to allow it to continue operating while it restructures but acknowledged that its routes and flights would be affected.
The airline said it was reviewing its schedules and could not assure people that they would travel on the routes they had booked, potentially causing passenger confusion on the East Coast, where US Airways is a dominant carrier. It might reroute passengers with connecting flights, to make better use of its hub cities.
USAirways is cutting back service out of the Burlington Airport.
The struggling airline is replacing the large jets with smaller ones. That means fewer seats available for travelers.
USAirways currently has a mix of makes and models of planes coming in and out of Burlington. But one big model is going away. USAirways told Channel 3 News Monday that the airline will no longer fly 737s in and out of Burlington. The big jets will be replaced by regional jets and turbo props. 737s hold 120 passengers. The most people you can get on the smaller jets and turbo props is 50.
USAirways says it is making the change for economic reasons. "We are not filling the larger jets," a company spokesperson told Channel 3 News Monday afternoon.
