Burlington is preparing to install video cameras on city buses
that transport public school students.
The ,700 project, paid for with grant money, is aimed at improving student behavior aboard the buses. The district tested cameras on buses serving Champlain Elementary School last spring and this fall and found that students behaved better knowing they were on film, Burlington School Superintendent Lyman Amsden said.
Many school districts in Vermont have installed cameras aboard their buses.
Burlington's case is slightly different. The city does not transport students on traditional yellow school buses, relying instead on the Chittenden County Transportation Authority to transport students. CCTA is the municipal bus system serving parts of Chittenden County.
CCTA neighborhood buses in Burlington serve almost exclusively students heading to and from school. Only those buses will have cameras.
Burlington to Montpelier buses are sparking interest.
This fall, the Chittenden County Transportation Authority will offer ... that option when it launches commuter service between Burlington and Montpelier. ... CCTA General Manager Christopher Cole plans to measure the interest in the planned bus service at two hearings scheduled next week in Montpelier and Burlington. He and his staff have conferred with big employers and state government to get a sense of employee schedules.
The authority's plans call for buses with capacity for about 20 passengers, including two in wheelchairs, to depart Burlington and Montpelier twice during the early-morning rush hours and again in the late afternoon. The one-way adult fare would be , but monthly passes would be offered. Only a few stops are planned -- in Waterbury and Richmond -- to keep the travel time close to an hour.
Anyone who rides Interstate 89 between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. has seen the steady stream of vehicles heading in both directions

Burlington's CCTA planning to run in Washington County.
Buses will start rolling along the former Wheels routesin central Vermont on Monday morning.
Wheels Transportation Services Inc. abruptly stopped service April 7 and subsequently filed for bankruptcy. The sudden departure of bus service stranded workers, schoolchildren and people on their way to medical appointments.
The Chittenden County Transportation Authority will fill the void starting Monday, after negotiating with the state to operate in central Vermont on an emergency basis. Bus routes will remain similar to those traced by Wheels, said Chris Cole, general manager of the CCTA.
The renewed bus service comes as a relief to many people who live in and near Barre and Montpelier.
Paul Audy of Montpelier said he was stranded at a bus stop April 7 when a Wheels bus failed to arrive. Audy said he had to pay for a ride home and temporarily leave the wheelchair he uses at a friend's house in Barre.

CCTA increases frequency of bus service between Essex and Burlington.
Commuters riding the bus from Essex Junction to Burlington travel as guinea pigs in a public transportation experiment started this week.
The Chittenden Central Transportation Authority has increased the bus service along the route from every 30 minutes to every 15 minutes during peak hours. Peak hours are from 6:15 to 9 a.m. with departures from the Amtrak station in Essex Junction; and from 2:45 to 6:15 p.m. with departures from Cherry Street in Burlington. Bus fare, without a discounted pass, is .25.
The route will be the first -- not including the College Street Shuttle -- to provide 15-minute service. The bus company has considered increasing the frequency of service along the route for about six years, CCTA General Manager Chris Cole said.
"Fifteen-minute bus service nationally is where you can start to consider the public transportation service convenient," Cole said.

CCTA is Looking at Diesel / Electric Hybrid Buses.
It looks like a bus, but any comparison ends there. The 40-foot rig that rolled into town Friday morning was a hybrid that runs on both electric power and diesel fuel, representing a dramatic improvement over conventional transit. ... The diesel engine runs constantly at least at an idle to power the heat and air conditioning and keep the batteries charged. But the buses run solely on electricity from a dead stop to ten MPH, at which point the diesel power begins to kick in. The process repeats at thirty MPH. Top speed is 73 MPH. The vehicle has plenty of power and pickup but runs quietly. As a "clean" diesel, it puts out minimal emissions. ... When it goes into production Justice says the hybrid bus will cost ,000 to ,000 more than a conventional diesel model, which can run ,000. But it runs so much quieter, cleaner and cheaper. The Chittenden County Transportation Authority wants to buy as many as four hybrids within the next three years -- smaller thirty-foot models.

CCTA Objects to running train from Burlington to Essex
The Chittenden County Transportation Authority board is recommending against adding the Burlington-to-Essex train to the county's long-range transportation plan.
Nobody has determined precisely how to pay for all of the train's preparations and operations, said Dave Davis of Shelburne, chairman of the CCTA board.
Davis said he worries that property taxes would fund the train. The CCTA, which operates buses in much of the county, receives about 30 percent of its revenue from local property taxes.
The concern, Davis said, is new demands on property taxpayers for the train could mean less property tax money coming in to help run CCTA. Davis said planners should find a money source other than property taxes to pay for public transit. "The board is not against rail. The concern is where the funding is coming from," he said.

Practically everyone who boarded a Friday morning bus
run to the University Mall said they were using public transportation because they don't have cars.
It was just as well. They'd have a hard time finding a parking spot.
Instead, they looked down upon the sea of scurrying cars threading into shopping centers, and arrived free of parking burdens. If ever there was a day when it might have been beneficial not to have a car, the day after Thanksgiving was it.
One alternative to fighting the traffic at and near the malls was letting a Chittenden County Transportation Authority bus driver worry about all those cars, as a trip from Burlington to University Mall, then on to Williston, Essex and back to Burlington showed.
Of course, the bus can be caught up in the same traffic jams as other vehicles. It was stop and go along Dorset Street, and in the parking lot through the mall.
Williston bus service might end
WILLISTON -- Bus service to Williston, Chittenden County's retail epicenter and the site of a growing number of jobs, is
expected to end June 30.
A federal program to promote access to jobs paid for half of the annual ,000 cost, with the state Agency of Transportation
picking up the rest of the tab. The federal grant paid for the bus service because it was designed to take low-income people to
new jobs in Williston.
A strained state budget and the low number of daily riders -- approximately 100 people -- does not justify spending more than
,000 a year, said Bruce Bender, the senior policy analyst for the transportation agency.
With the state withdrawing its financial support, Chittenden County Transportation Authority, which operates buses in much of Chittenden County, will end the Williston route. n.
