Kids ALIVE: Seen and Heard
Since the beginning of the year, children have been asking us for Bibles. Not many, but one here, two there. I don't claim to understand these things, but they do get my attention.
So this past Saturday, the Bible was our focus. Anyone who wanted one could have one. We taught on the inerrancy of scripture, then made the Word of God available. Thanks to the Vermont Ecumenical Bible Society, we had children's Bibles for the younger ones and hard cover NIVs for the older kids. I like all Bibles signed, dated, with the child's name on the inside, and a short exhortation. Time consuming, yes, but worthwhile to make it personal, which the scriptures are.
Then, to get them to crack open the Book, we started a weekly Bible Treasure Hunt. It's just a single question about a particular chapter in the Bible, but, if they get it right, they're in the running to win stuff. A little incentive, and, maybe while they're checking things out, God will open up those 'wondrous things' the Word is full of. Even though I didn't start reading the Bible faithfully until I was in my early 20s, I remember scripture jumping off the page and ministering to me even as a child in Sunday School. We want to give young hearts access to God's Word. The Lord of that Word can take it from there.
A few of the kids looked up the answer to the first Bible Treasure Hunt question as soon as they grabbed their Bible. It was encouraging to see so many Bibles disappear into so many homes. Let's pray the enthusiasm continues.
Light on,
Pastor Doug
