Athena's Attic
is one of several recent expansions and moves among local women's clothing retailers on Church Street.
Stephanie Douglas-Hughes...and co-owner Kelly Sullivan opened Athena's Attic, right next to Phoenix, on March 16.
Athena's Attic came about after Douglas-Hughes' grandmother died, leaving a treasure-trove of old clothing and jewelry that would become the genesis of the new shop.
She brought a few of her grandmother's items back to her store.
Douglas-Hughes and Sullivan went on a whirlwind shopping spree in New York City and the Midwest buying up used shirts, dresses, even ball gowns for the store. They chose the Midwest because the pickings are less expensive and better quality than on the East or West coasts, Douglas-Hughes said.
B-Side

Isadora
is a lingerie shop that has moved from College Street, around the corner to Church Street, across from Leunig's Bistro in the former Child Travel offices. Monelle was interested in the space, but backed out. Isadora owner Irene Callisto jumped on the chance to get onto Church Street.
"I had built a pretty loyal customer base where I was and I felt I needed, pardon the pun, more exposure," Callisto said.
The move has gone well, she said. Diners at Leunig's across the pedestrian mall see the store and come in. The increased foot traffic on Church Street means more customers wander in, she said.

Nan Patrick...has been there with the sequined party dresses, the silk shantung wedding outfits and the wool gabardine interview suits for nearly three decades. Patrick has decided to close her store.
Just one block east of the Church Street Marketplace, Nan Patrick's boutique has been a fixture in downtown Burlington, one of a dwindling number of shops where the owner is the one who helps customers select their merchandise and rings up the sales.
Patrick decided the time was right to close the chapter on her life that started when she was 23 and arrived in Burlington with a bachelor's degree in sociology and a family history steeped in retail.

is a a free-spirited and funky women's clothing store in an upstairs shop on Burlington's Church Street Marketplace. Stephanie Douglas-Hughes' grandmother influenced her in another way recently, by inspiring her to open a vintage clothing store. She and co-owner Kelly Sullivan opened Athena's Attic, right next to Phoenix, on March 16. ... Douglas-Hughes chose to stay on a second floor space. Athena's Attic and Phoenix are at the top of a steep flight of stairs above Ken's Pizza. She had a chance to take the space vacated by Roots and eventually occupied by Monelle, but decided against the move onto street level. The out-of-the-way space fits the image of the shops as hidden finds with eclectic collections of clothing. Phoenix also carries tapestries and a corner of the store is dedicated to herbs.

While stores come and go in Burlington and Church Street, some, like The Shoe Horn, persist. "You have to roll with the punches," Horn says. "Being here myself six days a week is really important. I listen to what the customers want." He sees a lot of repeat business, a lot of customer loyalty: "One of the things we really stress is friendliness and service," Horn says. "In a big-box store, you don't see a face behind the product."

Tina’s Home Designs, has weathered 40 years of fashion changes
in Burlington. ... Despite a social climate that discouraged women from working, let alone owning a business, Gregoire returned from Italy with the intention of opening a fabrics store. Gregoire had spent all her life sewing, so she didn't see any reason why she couldn't sell fabrics to women who sewed their own clothes.
"...It was a lot different back then. Most of the businesses on Church Street were family-owned. All the women sewed their own clothes. I know I didn't want to go back working for a phone company, so I thought I'd do something I was fairly good at."
In 1978 a building at the top of Church Street came up for sale. Gregoire bought the building and moved her store into the first floor.
Gregoire still owns the building and rents eight commercial units.
