Burlington's downtown retailers get a clean bill of health
in a study by a national market analysis firm.
The report, commissioned by the city's economic development office, examined the retail environment in Burlington. The downtown retail area is healthy, said Jeff Hershey, director of professional services at Market Insite Group in Troy, Mich.
The city is thriving in the face of competition from retail centers in Williston and South Burlington, Hershey said. "I've seen situations in other areas similar to this, and the downtown Burlington area has weathered it very well."
Burlington's stores are what marketers call lifestyle stores, specialty shops that cater to a specific market as opposed to stores like Home Depot or Wal-Mart that market to the masses, Hershey said.
Hershey credited the pedestrian mall on Church Street for keeping the downtown vibrant. He doubted the Burlington Town Center mall would have survived if it weren't for the draw of the Church Street Marketplace.

Champlain Mill
offers one-of-a-kind shopping, dining and specialty services no one should miss while visiting Vermont. Its exposed brick walls and post beam design serve as a reminder of an important past. Built in 1910 and powered by the Winooski River, the mill produced fine worsted wool products until 1954. Unfortunately, the demise of textile milling in the Northeast did not spare the mill. The building served as a warehouse until it was restored to its present day splendor in 1981.
Church Street Marketplace,
the four blocks from Main Street to Pearl Street, is at close to 100 percent occupancy, Church Street Marketplace Executive Director Ron Redmond said.
"We have 225,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space and only about 1,200 square feet is vacant," Redmond said referring to first-floor space on the Marketplace.
Burlington Town Center has an additional 225,000 square feet. Retailers pay a premium to rent on Church Street.
"You pay twice as much on Church Street as you would on a side street, just 100 feet around the corner," said Jeff Nick president of J.L. Davis Realty.
J.L. Davis leases several properties on Church Street. Street-level retail space would lease from to a square foot compared to the mid-teens per square foot for space off the Marketplace, Davis said.
Retailers pay the premium because traffic on Church Street is much higher than the side streets. Some shoppers don't venture off Church Street, Nick said.

K-Mart
Kado Gifts headed in the kitchen direction, "Kiss the Cook!
... The year after attending their first kitchen products show, the store had 42 percent growth, and in the 12 months following the name change, there was about 60 percent growth.
While the growth amazed the couple, they found it difficult as well, "because that kind of growth sinks your cash flow," says Bouffard. "It was hard to keep pumping money back into the store to buy products, because they were selling so fast." ... "We sold cheese," says Bouffard. "A cheese company had just come out and said, 'We can't guarantee our butter doesn't have BST [a bovine growth hormone] in it.' We had about two and a half pounds of this cheese in the store, and some guy from some action group called us and said, 'If you don't stop selling this cheese, we're going to do a picket line in front of your store.' The Vermonter came out in us.
"We were riding home one day from work, and we were so livid about this guy from out of state telling us what we can sell, and Mike said, 'Well, just kiss my cheese!' and I got all giggly and said, 'That's it! Kiss the Cook! That's the name!'"

Kmart's BlueLight Special flickered nationwide Tuesday,
as the nation's No. 3 discount retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and announced a billion reorganization package.
Kmart operates three stores in Vermont. The South Burlington outlet -- shabby and alone in the Shelburne Road shopping center where a supermarket, drug store, dry cleaner and movie theater closed years ago -- was quiet at noon. The center, owned by Hannaford Brothers and long for sale, draws so little traffic that snow is cleared only near Kmart. ... Nobody could remember when Kmart had last been remodeled, or the merchandise rearranged. Men entering the store bear left for sporting goods, hunting equipment, hardware. Women veer right for intimate apparel, children's clothing and home goods, a department that has buoyed Kmart's image. ... But Stewart's pastel sheets and plush towels don't compensate for unavailable specials, shoppers said.

Melissa Fairchild named her Burlington boutique Whim.
Whim opened last March, focusing on high-end jeans and trendy T-shirts -- what Fairchild described as "casual wear perfect for Burlington."
The boutique was one of more than 9,400 new businesses that started in Vermont in 2007. But the Secretary of State's office, which registers each new business, said that number is down for the first time in a decade, after years of steady growth. 2006 saw 9,971 business starts. In 2007, that number dropped by more than 500, to 9,452 new businesses.
... Melissa Fairchild said starting her business was harder than she expected -- but success has made it worth it.
The store just celebrated its first anniversary.
"It's huge," she said of the milestone. "They say if you can make it the first year, you have a very good chance of making it forever."

One of Vermont's oldest stores has closed its doors
for the last time. Abraham's Camera Center in Burlington first opened for business almost a hundred-twenty years ago but went out quietly this week, almost without notice.
The camera store has been open since 1884, and so the papered-over front door attracted attention from passersby familiar with the pattern of businesses along Church Street. Abraham's closed abruptly on Christmas eve.
... A downtown competitor reportedly is buying out Abraham's inventory, leaving a display window full of antique cameras that could have been bought brand new, right here. Abraham's has been in business that long.
It's not clear if owner Irv Abrams's legal problems were connected to the closing. Abrams entered a plea deal in court after he was charged almost three years ago with taking nude photographs of underage girls.

Rags and Riches has more drapery fabric than you could ever hope
to whisk into a lifetime of ball gowns. The fabric outlet carries more than 500,000 yards of stock in-house, making it one of the largest of its kind in New England – maybe the largest, says co-owner Jon Rosenberg.
"Outlet" is far from a perfect word for Rags and Riches. While it does reflect much of the shop's pricing structuredeep discounts on high-end fabricsit doesn't truly mirror the South Burlington business's operation. Over the 25-plus years since the idea to sell fabrics came to the company's founders, Rosenberg and his wife, Lee, growth has led the company down more than just one path, as they have followed their opportunities and added services not ordinarily found in outlet stores. And while the story of Rags and Riches is not a true "rags-to-riches" tale, it certainly contains some of the elements of one.

Service Merchandise Co. Inc., a 42-year-old home-and-jewelry
specialty chain that has operated under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection since March 1999, announced Friday that it is going out of business.
The company, which has more than 200 stores in 32 states, had been trying to turn itself around at a time when the retail industry endured what some analysts are calling the weakest holiday season in about 30 years.
Company executives said the weak economy and slow sales after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks hurt the company's 2001 results and prevented it from completing its planned business reorganization and emergence from bankruptcy.
Service Merchandise lost million in 2000. As of November, it had liabilities totaling .34 billion and assets of billion.
Service Merchandise has a store on Shelburne Street in Burlington, which employs 40. The store is slated to close in April. The store has been in Burlington since the mid-70s.

Shoppers at stores on Burlington's Church Street Marketplace
next year might be able to meander the block between College and Main streets without competing with motor vehicle traffic.
The money and the will appear to be in place to convert the block to the same pedestrian-friendly design of the retail corridor's upper three blocks.
... The impetus for the change, said commission chairman Tim Halvorson, came from the 25 merchants in the lower block, which has formally been a part of the Marketplace since its opening in 1981.
That year, only two Church Street blocks were closed to traffic. The block between Cherry and Pearl streets was bricked and closed to traffic in 1995.
...
Commission representatives and their hired consultants, who are designing the changes, are scheduled to give the city Planning Commission an update on the plans tonight, although the only formal bureaucratic steps remaining are go-aheads from the Marketplace Commission and the City Council.
Shoppers flocked to malls Monday
to take advantage of big discounts the day before Christmas, but crowds were thinner than some merchants had expected, and the mood was more subdued, casting a cloud on the end of a shopping season that's expected to be the weakest in at least a decade. Unseasonably warm weather, a widespread sense of sadness in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and economic jitters have kept customers away from stores.
Shoppers on the Church Street Marketplace are busy looking
for the perfect presents for their loved ones. Meanwhile some businesses at the lower end of the street have just one item on their wish list: more pedestrian traffic.
There's a proposal on the table to close off the lower section of the street to cars, to bring more foot traffic to the storefronts. At the Michael Kehoe men's store, they see plenty of pedestrians hesitate at the corner of Church and College Streets. "They sort of look over the chain and they more often than not will go back up Church Street," according to store owner Tom Pierce.
The project already has .8 million in federal funding. "About half of that we think we'll need to do the re-surfacing, primarily what we're talking about is making that first block look exactly like the other blocks in terms of surfacing," said Church Street Marketplace Executive Director Ron Redmond.

The Apple Mountain Co.,
their "conglomerate" comprises Apple Mountain Vermont Gifts & Specialty Foods on Church Street; Kiss the Cook, a locally owned kitchen and gift market, also on Church Street; the gift shop at the Radisson Hotel Burlington; Apple Mountain Harbor Store, which opened this year; the stores on the Lake Champlain ferry boats; and a shop in Port Kent, N.Y., where the ferries land.
Bouffard and Soulia have allowed each store to take on its own personality and find its niche. The result is that, while some of the stores are similar, no two are alike, and while their story seems simple common sense is often the tilting factor in decisions it is ripe with tips and encouragement for anyone seeking to build a solid small-business base from which to grow.
Chioffi ... opened Apple Mountain Vermont Gifts. ... As it became clear that the best direction for the store to take was an exclusively Vermont one, Bouffard and Chioffi began pounding the pavement trying to find craftspeople who were willing to wholesale to them.
The business model for Classic Outfitters has been a fluid
one, changing often, but the alterations have been more than mere lashing about. There was always a design, and when the design proved flawed, it was simply altered. Eventually the tinkering fell on a formula that worked and Ranz stuck with it.
It's the nature of business.
... Ranz closed the Stowe shop in 1996 and one year later closed the Essex Junction and Champlain Mill stores and opened a new location the largest yet in the Staples Plaza in South Burlington.
... Classic Outfitters attracts customers both for its comprehensive collection of fly-fishing equipment and other tackle and for its dedication to expert, face-to-face service. Ranz and his second-in-command, Rhey Plumley, view catalogs (Orvis, Cabal, etc.) and big-box stores (Dick's Sporting Goods) as their chief competition. The way to combat those businesses' inherent advantages, they say, is with individual attention.

The long-awaited Lowe's in South Burlington is now open,
making Vermont the last state in the country to have the home improvement store.
It looked like Christmas Eve in the parking lot Thursday as shoppers turned out for the grand opening. Some were there to shop. Some were just curious about the store. The project spent seven years on the drawing board as developers battled legal challenges over Lowe's stormwater permit.
The store officially opened at 6:00 Thursday morning, and customers were already at the door waiting to go in.
The store has about 160 employees. It is 106,000 square feet, but the general manager said it was one of the fastest stores the chain has ever built. It went up in 85 days, compared to the usual 120 days.
The lower block of the Church Street Marketplace
is getting a face lift.
For 22 years, the majority of Church Street has been off-limits to car traffic. The only exception has been the lower block between Main and College Streets.
That's about to change as the city of Burlington is tearing up the road, closing it to traffic, and rebuidling it with brick to mirror the upper blocks.
"And so we had an overwhelming majority of restauranteurs and businesses down here saying, 'wait a minute, we want the benefits that the upper blocks are getting, can you please bring those to us.' So it became kind of an overwhelming cry from our stakeholders and we said, 'okay, this is what they want, let's do it,'" says Ron Redmond, Executive Director of the Church Street Marketplace.
The cost of the project is about ,000 and will be paid for with federal highway funds.
Mark Bosma - Channel 3 News
The shopping season didn't end with Christmas
as hoards hit the stores Wednesday. ... Bargains were bountiful on the day after Christmas. Retailers slashed prices to move inventory and make way for spring merchandise.
The holiday season accounts for nearly a quarter of retailer's annual sales. Anticipating weak sales in a shaky economy, stores across the country put merchandise on sale earlier and at greater discounts than in boom times. ... Half of the marketplace stores were ahead of last year. Forty percent were even and 10 percent were down compared to last year, said Ron Redmond, executive director of the marketplace. The gains can be attributed to warm weather, a major renovation of the Burlington Town Center mall and promotions, Redmond said. Unseasonably warm weather made for a tough selling season at Black Diamond Sportswear, a store in the University Mall that sells fleece outerwear.

Vermont has filed suit against Ganz jewelry Over Lead in Jewelry.
Vermont has filed suit against an Ontario importer that sold jewelry with high lead levels through stores in Vermont. Bill Sorrell, D-Vt. Attorney General, announced Wednesday that his office filed a consumer fraud lawsuit against Ganz, Inc.
Lab tests found that samples of Ganz jewelry and other metal products had extremely high lead levels-- as much as 700 times the maximum recommended by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Lead can poison children who put it in their mouths.
The suit alleges Ganz engaged in unfair and deceptive trade practices by distributing products that pose a substantial risk of serious injury and by not disclosing the presence of lead in its products. The Attorney General is asking the court for a ban in Vermont on the sale of products that contain lead, refunds to consumers and retailers, and penalties of up to ,000 for each violation of the law.

in preparation for holiday shoppers, merchants at the Burlington Town Center on Wednesday unveiled their latest weapon in the battle for holiday retail sales -- gift certificates.
Downtown Burlington merchants have teamed up to offer certificates good at more than 200 shops and restaurants in both the mall and downtown. In the past, the mall and the marketplace have offered separate gift certificate programs.
In the ever-competitive drive to win over area shoppers during the biggest months of the retail season, merchants decided to combine forces. Once the top retail center in the region, Burlington has felt the squeeze from suburban shopping centers in South Burlington and Williston.
