Summer Save 6 #1

Sotheby's Heirloom Discovery Days
By Sam Ankerson

Visitors to Shelburne Museum on Saturday, September 23 will have the opportunity to learn more about the historical background and market value of their antiques, heirlooms, and other treasured items when experts from Sotheby’s Auction House in New York City come to the museum for Sotheby’s Heirloom Discovery Day®. In a format similar to the popular PBS television program Antiques Roadshow, Heirloom Discovery Day® specialists will provide verbal appraisals in the following fields:

  • Silver, Porcelain, and Glass
  • Ceramics
  • American and European drawings, prints, and paintings
  • Asian works of art
  • Quilts, rugs, samplers, and other textiles
  • Furniture (or photographs and measurements of large pieces)

On Friday September 22 at 5 p.m., internationally known antiques authority and featured Antiques Roadshow appraiser Leslie Keno will give a lecture entitled, "Collecting Trends in American Furniture." On Saturday during the appraisal sessions, visitors may participate in an informal clinic given by Shelburne Museum staff on caring for and maintaining antiques.

Jewelry will not be appraised, and participants are asked to bring only hand-carried objects (or a photograph with object measurements for larger pieces). The hours for Heirloom Discovery Day® are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost is $10 per object plus museum admission (limit four appraisals per person). Admission for Mr. Keno’s lecture is $10; reservations may be made by calling (802) 985-3348 x3750. For general information on the event, you may either call Sam at (802) 985-3348 x3397 or visit their web site at www.shelburnemuseum.org.
