The MarketFest is the Church Street MarketPlaces’ annual celebration to kick off the fall season. The weekend-long events features fortune cookie sales and street entertainment for both young and old. The event is also known as the fortune cookies sale. Where shoppers get fortune cookies for free from the information booths on the street and bring them inside the stores as they shop. When their purchase has been rung up, they open the fortune cookie up in from of the cashier to discover where their discount will be. Discount slips range from many 10% discounts to some 40% discounts. There are also 20% and 30% slips, and the higher the discount, the lower your chances of getting that discount.
In recent years, outside parties have sponsored games on the mall block during the event as well. Some games are for older people and some for children. There have people in animal costumes as well. UVM and the Stowe Mountain Resort have been recent sponsors of these games. UVM sees this as an opportunity to present something that's not alcohol related for its students and promotes some good community. So it brings students down and have a sense of what's happening with our downtown in a very positive environment.
During the festival there is also music entertainment on two stages, typically the top block and the block between College and Bank Streets. Bands and individuals are hired to play and paid by sponsorship from local businesses. Musicians and bands have included New Alpha Missionary Baptist Choir, Lisa St. Ann, Jon Gailmor, Mango Jam, Mambo Jumbo, Bosnian Lilies, Los Diablos, Planet Dance Band, Dance Troup, Black Sea Quartet, and Traditional Irish Dance. A restaurant or Contoise Auditorium is usually picked as a rain site.
