Kid's Day
Here is an event specifically for children. It starts with the parade, which starts around 9:30 in the morning. And best of all, most of the events are free. If you want to be in the parade you should show up at Edmunds School on Main Street by 9:00, for the line up. You can decorate your stroller, bike, or wagon, and join the fun!
Traffic is stopped on Main Street in Burlington this morning for a parade. It isn't a national holiday - but a celebration of kids. It was a day dedicated to the kids. All kinds of kids: from two legged "older" kids, to four legged pets-- dressed to impress Some commercial kid-favorites were on-hand ... not to mention some unique mascots. The parade led to a waterfront carnival. At the waterfront you will find many free events for children until about 3:30 in the afternoon.
Eleanor Ingersoll says, "kids day is a celebration of children and activities that help them grow and keep them stimulated. It is also an important event, in light of the battle that Vermont has been waging against underaged drinking and how to stop it."
Bob Keeshan star of the old "Captain Kangeroo" show, says "We placidly think that we live in a wonderful society here in Vermont, and we don't have the problems that the far off urban center have-- but it's not true. We have a great many problems with families and children and even though we're are a family-friendly state in terms of our government programs there is still a need for citizens, people to work directly in providing for families and children in Vermont, and that's why I'm here."
For Nancy Bove, the Kids Day Coordinator, "it is a goal, really, for us to incorporate the little ones right up on through. And we did have some of the older kids in the parade today. Representing what they do and the positive things that they do. It seems like a lot of times, people tend to focus on the negative things"
Though arts and crafts -- and sometimes-even goo -- parents were thankful for what kids got out of the day.
