First Night is a community-based, substance-free New Year’s Eve festival of the arts in downtown Burlington. For 20 Years, First Night brings the best Vermont and regional artists to the largest one-day festival of the arts in Vermont. It is a safe, family-friendly day-long event, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display at midnight. It is the largest one-day arts festival in Vermont, and typically draws 20,000 people.
First Night is a concept that has grown to 225 cities across the United States and the world. In 1983, First Night Burlington was the fourth city to join the celebration, which began in Boston in 1976.
First Night Burlington is one of six finalists for the First Night International's "Creative Programming" award at the upcoming conference the last weekend of April in Pittsburgh. Our web site has also been nominated for an award.
Bill Lloyd, Chair of Board of Directors, says “First Night events this year are focused more heavily in downtown Burlington in an effort to provide easier access to venues and provide for a more festive atmosphere. These activities will be highlighted by a parade through the streets of downtown featuring the Burlington Taiko drummers. We have also added more activities for teens and young adults.”
