Time For IMC Staff To Move Into New Place
Time For IMC Staff To Move Into New Place
In case anybody is wondering, we cleaned up the old
Vermont Independent Media Center space last Saturday. We took a week off from our web magazine for much needed rest and relaxation. We met at and agreed to use the office space at 150 Cherry Street as our temporary office. We will be subletting that space until we can find something better.
We will be moving into the new space Friday evening, which I will not be available for. Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 10th. I put down the first months rent and we have $800 coming from the Spark program, which will cover the security deposit and almost two months rent.
We like the little office, which will be both quite and downtown. It also has a rug and an air conditioner, which will be nice, as it gets hot out. We have enough chairs, desks, tables, and at least three computers (maybe 5) going into that little space. Because of the fact that the place is small and is used by a group of psychiatrists, we need to keep a low profile in this place. We will probably have to put outreaching on hold --- at least for a few months.
People should think about how much time they are willing to put into staffing the office. People with keys need to keep the office open so people can use it. I believe the people that put a fair amount of time staffing should have the keys. I know that I for one would not want to be putting that kind of commitment into a project, without keys to get into the place. Also, if I put in that kind of time, I will probably want to keep one of my computers in the place. That way I always have something to do while I’m there.
We also have a couch that folds out into a bed, a water cooler (if we choose to pay for it), and some worthless fluorescent lights in the ceiling. Only one appears to work. We will probably want to bring in some of our own lighting. The person we are subletting the office from says the lights do work but are really bright. It does have a small office in one corner facing the street, if we need a room off to the side for privacy or sound. Both rooms also have large picture windows, which make for a good view of Cherry Street, and a mediocre view of the Church Street intersection.
