When you click on a link in my directories, the web site you are requesting will be opened in a separate window or tab. This worked great until version six. Unfortunately, many web sites will open windows with advertisements and junk that you don't want. So Internet Explorer is asking you if you really requested that information or web site -- or is this web site just trying to force feed it to you? This web site does NOT open up pop-ups with ads or porn, here. I open up the web sites you request in a separate window or tab as a convenience.

An expansion project at Vermont's largest hospital is expected to cost six-point-five million dollars more than earlier estimates. Officials at Fletcher Allen Health Care say the higher price than the amount given five months ago is largely due to regulators' demands. The latest figure comes from the hospital's finalized application seeking state permission for the project. Fletcher Allen this year had to apply for a new state permit after managers lied to regulators and concealed the expansion project's true cost. Hospital spokesman Mike Noble says much of the added costs already have been spent or budgeted. The hospital has announced plans to borrow 85 million dollars next year to help pay for the project. Everyday at the University Health Center in Burlington disease is cured, pain is relieved, lives are saved. Vermonters come in for outpatient surgery -- one day procedures requiring little or no anesthesia. It's a booming segment in modern health care that has max out this 80 year old building. Dr. Glen Goldman, a dermatologist, is removing a cancer growth from a patient in surroundings he says are sub par for outpatient surgery. "Well, number one is that I am continually banging my head into the lights here because normally the O.R. lights are high up," Goldman says. "There really isn't a lot of space here. We've done surgeries here many times before but it's just cramped quarters." Doctors and patients need to hop between floors. Supplies spill out into the hallway and create obstacles in areas where patients must pass through. There are some vintage operating tables dating back to the 1940s. Click here to read more.

Fletcher Allen Health Care has raised nearly half the $30 million it wants the public to contribute toward its massive expansion project. The Burlington hospital announced Wednesday the kickoff of a public fund-raising campaign with $14.5 million already promised from major donors. The hospital expects to seek donations for another year and a half to raise the remaining $15.5 million. All the money will go toward the hospital's building project, which could cost more than $225 million, said John Marshall, vice president of development. Donations are one of three sources the hospital is using to build a new outpatient center, expand the emergency department and upgrade medical facilities. The other two sources are a $150 million bond and operating revenues.

Reason for the Renaissance Project is space. Fletcher Allen Health Care's doctors and nurses say of the conditions they work in and patients face when they visit Vermont's largest hospital. Their hopes for improvement are pinned on a project expected to:

  1. Increase the number of operating rooms from 14 to a possible 22.
  2. Shorten waiting time for doctors' appointments and diagnostic tests.
  3. Cut the number of trips patients make to see specialists.
  4. Add 1,284 parking spaces.
  5. Update buildings and equipment on the Burlington campus.
For two years, construction crews have been hauling out earth, assembling I-beams, pouring concrete and otherwise erecting a network of buildings intended to bring new life to the aging hospital. Now, the final shape of the hospital's massive Renaissance Project lies in the hands of state regulators. Fletcher Allen has requested permission to spend a total of $356 million on the project $129 million more than its permits allow. Click here to read more.
