ACERCA Plans to Protest
A representative from the Burlington area
ACERCA office has informed the Burlington Web Magazine that their group plans to protest at the Burlington office of the Vermont Democratic
Party on Monday, October 9 at 4:00 pm to deliver the following message to
Al Gore: "No Blood for Oil! Save the U'wa Tribe."
ACERCA stands for
"Action for Community & Ecology in the Regions of Central America."
Their office is located
at 156 College Street in Burlington, VT.
According to ACERCA,
Gore's family owns up to $1 million worth of stock in Occidental Petroleum
Corporation which is preparing to drill on U'wa tribal land in northern
Colombia. Gore will be given the message, appropriately on Columbus Day,
that the American people refuse to accept more indigenous genocide to
advance US interests. The U'wa tribe believes oil is the earth's life blood
and has threatened mass suicide if Occidental goes ahead with the drilling.
Gore, the self-proclaimed "environmental candidate" has refused to take a
stand on this issue even though he has encountered U'wa supporters numerous
times during the presidential campaign. In January of this year, members of
the Native Forest Network and ACERCA were arrested at Gore's headquarters
in Manchester, NH for attempting to get him to made a statement about the
U'wa.
The recent passage of a $1.3 billion aid bill for the government of
Colombia, which has the worst human rights record in the world, represents
a dangerous escalation of a failed policy. Over 35,000 people have been
killed in the Colombian war in the last ten years. Hundreds of thousands of
gallons of herbicide have been sprayed on the rainforests since 1996 with
the net result being a doubling of drug cultivation and production.
"As United States citizens we oppose the dangerous military escalation and
assault on the population and environment of Colombia and vehemently oppose
Occidental Petroleum's plan to drill on sacred U'wa
land," said Arthur Hynes, ACERCA's Colombia campaign coordinator. Hynes
continued, "We demand an end to military aid to Colombia and the spraying
of herbicides and the use and testing of mycoherbicides for coca and poppy
eradication."
