BFP put City Market was put to the price test. Yes, City Market -- Onion River Co-op's downtown reincarnation -- has Ring Dings. Yes, they have Skippy peanut butter. But Skippy, like many mainstream products, are on the bottom or top shelf with the organic brand at eye level. Yes, the deli-sandwich-salad-hot foods bar is intriguing. But customers pay at the checkout line which, on Wednesday, was seriously slow. And the seating area is awkwardly located beyond the check-out lines, at the front of the store. ... Much interest -- and some trepidation -- has been expressed concerning the deli, open 8 a.m.-8 p.m. daily. ... soup pricing might change from by-the-pound to container. Almost all the composed salads and hot foods (beef fajitas to beans) are made in-house but watch the scale: they are heavy. Lunch can easily cost .

Blueberry muffin mix sold in Hannaford grocery stores in five states is being recalled. Routine sampling by the New York state Department of Agriculture found milk in Hannaford Blueberry Muffin Mix, though the package labels did not indicate milk was an ingredient. If people who are allergic to milk eat any of the muffins they could face serious or life threatening reactions. The muffin mix was sold in stores in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. Consumers should return unused packages to a Hannaford store for a full refund. Burlington Discount Grocers opened with no fanfare on the corner of North Street and North Winooski Avenue just over a week ago. The store focuses on groceries rather than convenience items -- for instance it sells no cigarettes, beer or lottery tickets. Aside from health aids and toiletries it carries conventional supermarket fare. Surprising, the prices are pretty close to what you would find in a supermarket. Its closest competitor is the City Market, the Onion River Co-op-owned market that won the city's backing to open a new store a few blocks away, downtown. That store sells predominantly natural and upscale foods. As a result, Discount Grocers owner Bill Maglaris says his store fills a vacuum. ... Unlike the City Market, this grocery got no government grants or loans, but the city expedited its permits to get it open quickly. And Discount Grocers already is leaving a mark on the neighborhood through low prices and its reliance on Vermont-made products. Click here to read more.

Burlington Discount Grocers opened its door with 1200 square feet of groceries, paper goods and over-the-counter medicines. ... In a Burlington neighborhood that others might have passed over, Bill Maglaris saw opportunity. In April he leased a small storefront in a spruced up but aged Victorian on the corner of North Winooski Avenue and North Street in the heart of the Old North End. ... Four months later Maglaris contemplated the steamy store where an overtaxed air conditioner was having little effect. Business is a little slower than he'd hoped. With gross sales of about ,000 to date, business has been about half of what Maglaris had expected. He is not ready to give in. Maglaris plans to open a second store in New Haven on Monday and has plans for three more in coming months. "Our location has been a real deterrent. People are worried about parking," Maglaris said. Once people find the store and see the prices he's convinced they'll make a habit of shopping there. Prices are 30 percent to 35 percent below

Consumer Watch - Checking Out the Best Deal Just a few short weeks after the City Market debuted in Burlington a brand new Shaw's is getting ready to open its doors in Williston tomorrow. ... So we decided to put some of the grocers to the test. We took one basket and filling it with eight everyday items to see who can ring up the best savings. Shaw's gave us a sneak preview of their store, so we first went to the produce section and got four Granny Smith apples at .29 a pound. Over at City Market they're going for .49 a pound while Price Chopper is offering them at /usr42/home/burl-vt/public_html/food/grocery-stores/index.cgi.99 a pound. We then added some of the morning essentials: cereal, Tropicana Orange Juice and a carton of milk. All three stores had a variety of brands, but City Market offers more types of organic and soy milk, while the other two grocers offer their own store brands at a lesser price. ... . At Price Chopper we got them for .76. And at the new Shaw's the total was .42. But the results might not have been the same if we had chosen different items.

Grand Union Family Markets started out as Grand Union, a large supermarket chain based in Elmwood Park, New Jersey (later moving to Wayne, New Jersey) Grand Union operated in the northeastern United States. It entered bankruptcy protection for the third (and final) time in 2000. The company, which operated about 200 stores at the time of its demise, was divided among competitors like Shaw's Supermarkets, Stop & Shop, Key Food, and Tops Friendly Markets. C&S Wholesale Grocers, a large distributor of grocery products, took over Grand Union's warehouse operations and kept a handful of stores in smaller communities under the name Grand Union Family Markets. Hannaford Bros. Co. often brings the thought of "lowest price food" overall to most people in Burlington that have gone to the trouble of comparing the prices of the major stores. Unfortunately, they don't have as wide of a selection as Price Chopper on Shelburne Road. In 1883 Arthur and Howard Hannaford opened their fruit and vegetable stand in Portland, Maine. Hannaford currently operates 115 supermarkets located throughout Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts operating under the names of Shop ‘n Save and Hannaford Food and Drug Superstores. Hannaford Bros. Co. will open its 12th supermarket in Vermont, and its first in Burlington in North Avenue's Ethan Allen Shopping Center. The deal has been in the works since October 1998. The Grand Union at the shopping center closed after its third bankruptcy during March 2001. The Hannaford store will be 48,000 square feet, employing 150 part-time and full-time employees. It will have a pharmacy, a one-hour photo department, natural foods department, and full-service bakery and butcher sections. ... The store, which started construction in August, is part of a million to million redevelopment of the whole plaza that is just about complete, said David Hauke of Hauke Development in Burlington and owner of the land.

Not the Co-op?! I'd like to share some numbers with you; 57, 57, 58 71, 51, 52, & 75 .Of course this data is the % favorable for the Shaw's proposal in wards 1 through 7, respectively. The city average was 61.6% favorable. Even though this was only a single-issue ballot 13.4% of the eligible Burlington voters, voted. Before you conclude that voter turn out of 13+% is insignificant, let me share some other information with you. In the spring city elections of 98 with a full slate of issues only 12.8% and 7.7% of the eligible voters in 2 wards voted in the election of the councilors. I don't recall the mayor or any of the councilors ignoring those results or deciding that they were meaningless. Click here to read more.

Price Chopper My favorite 2 things about this story is their Artisan bread and they are open 24-hours a day, 7 days a weeks -- except for the major holidays. Shaw’s Supermarkets roots were firmly planted in New England back in 1860, when George C. Shaw opened his first store in Portland, Maine. Several years later, another native New Englander Maynard A. Davis opened his first ‘Public Markets’ in Brockton and New Bedford Massachusetts. These two men began the New England tradition we now know as Shaw’s Supermarkets, Inc. The success and growth of Shaw’s for more than 143 years is deeply rooted in the ingenuity and the beliefs of these two men to offer quality products and service to their customers. Today, Shaw’s Supermarkets continues to thrive and grow throughout New England, employing approximately 30,000 associates at locations in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Vermont. The Moon Meadow Market has closed after 3 years in business. ... By Friday, shelves in the 9,500-square-foot store were mostly bare. ... The cash registers were ringing and some customers left pleased with their finds. Others came out with nothing -- and said that was typical of their excursions to Moon Meadow. "It was over-priced, way over-priced," said Betsy Walters of South Burlington. "We've got Healthy Living. It's a much better store." ... Healthy Living is a natural foods store just 200 paces out the back door of Moon Meadow. Two miles away, in downtown Burlington, the Onion River Co-op opened another grocery -- also focused on natural foods -- just weeks ago on South Winooski Avenue. ... Others speculated the February opening of City Market pushed an already wobbly Moon Meadow to the brink. ... The increasing number of natural food products and organic produce at conventional grocery stores such as Shaw's, Hannaford and Price Chopper is also creating more competition, Lesser said.

The state Health Department inspection program rates restaurants on 44 measures of food handling and housekeeping. The department has put extra emphasis on 13 of the measures....These "critical" items must be corrected during the time of inspection.... Points are subtracted from a score of 100 for each failing noted by the inspector..... A restaurant must score above 70 and have all critical items corrected or the establishment will be asked to close. The Burlington Free Press keeps a running list of the most recent score for all restaurants, listed by town (or for all towns in Vermont). Click here to read more.
