Smokejacks Restaurant
is conveniently situated at the corner of Church and Main Streets. Smokejacks was opened in the summer of 1997 with a specific goal: to provide Vermonters with a high-quality, exciting dining experience, but without fluff and pretention. When the Smokejacks menu was created, it was with a focus on comfort foods, local and seasonal meats and produce, and then something else that was intuitive, yet surprising, to make it a knock-out dish. The result? A dynamic menu with every dish focused on maximum flavor. For example, instead of the usual mashed potatoes, Smokejacks' are very creamy and garlic-infused; and the baked beans that come with our spicy barbequed pork ribs are enriched with flavorful, smoky bourbon. Seared Yellow Fin Tuna, simultaneously meaty and light, comes with some spicy black pepper crackers, but then are cooled with an additional side of cucumber noodles. Crème Brulee is an always appealing dessert, but why not add rich, bittersweet chocolate and coconut milk?

The state Health Department inspection program rates restaurants
on 44 measures of food handling and housekeeping. The department has put extra emphasis on 13 of the measures....These "critical" items must be corrected during the time of inspection.... Points are subtracted from a score of 100 for each failing noted by the inspector..... A restaurant must score above 70 and have all critical items corrected or the establishment will be asked to close.
The Burlington Free Press keeps a running list of the most recent score for all restaurants, listed by town (or for all towns in Vermont).

Bangkok Bistro,
of 144 Church St, mix of great food and drinks make this Asian/Thai restaurant one of the best Church Street has to offer.
The appetizers at Bangkok are a good place to start. A few of my favorites are the fried calamari, the spicy seared tuna, crab angles (crab rangoon) and the grilled beef salad. All of these aps are top notch and it makes choosing one very hard. I will say the calamari is some of the best I've ever had though; they cut the squid in strips lengthwise, which I've never seen before, plus they use the best, light and crispy batter.
The menu at Bangkok is mainly Thai oriented, you'll see noodle dishes, rice dishes, curries, seafood, and grilled items. It all seems to be prepared with top quality ingredients, and it all to tastes good to me. I can't really comment on man of their noodle dishes, or crazy bowls since I've hardly sampled them myself. In fact, I can only really comment on a few of their main dishes.

Lake-View bar and grille
offers American cuisine in a causal fine dining atmosphere. Lemuel Drew built the original structure of our restaurant in 1861, when this property was called Lake-View Farm. Lemuel Drew owned and managed hotels in the downtown Burlington area, and his Lake-View Farm provided fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. When his hotels were full or a road weary traveler stopped by they were welcomed into a beautiful home. We are trying to revive the spirit of this old house, so come sit, relax, and enjoy.
The dining room offers lunch and dinner menus that offer a variety of beef, chicken, and seafood items. The menus also accommodate vegetarians. The lounge area equipped with a full bar, TV's, and comfy chairs offers a pub menu or the dinner menu if you prefer. A children's menu is available throughout lunch and dinner. Banquet facilities are located upstairs from the dining room, offering plated and buffet menu options, or even just a classy atmosphere for a cocktail party.

Rusty Scuffer Restaurant
IS A relatively inexpensive steak and seafood restaurant on Church Street. Mainly a older locals joint, the Rusty Scuffer serves up all sorts of poultry, meat and seafood. The restaurant has a small non-smoking bar you can sit at if you are looking to chat with some townies; the restaurant part is a step up from the typical Burlington bar atmosphere. The best thing about the Scuffer is the portions and the prices… where else can you find a steak and lobster combo in Burlington for UNDER 20 dollars? No where that I know of.
I can’t honestly say that any of the food is top notch, but it isn’t crappy fast food either. I go to the Scuffer for lunch about once a month, the open faced chopped steak sandwich smothered in gravy is great. For dinner, I recommend the seafood chowder as an appetizer - it tastes home made with all the assorted seafood you’ll find in it.
A Single Pebble
serve Chinese food cooked in the traditional Chinese Szechuan style - for an authentic dining experience.
Last summer, Vermont magazine put chef-owner Steve Bogart on its cover and proclaimed the Pebble "the best restaurant in the great, green state of Vermont."
It's greatest dishes are the Dry Fried Green Beans, Spicy Three River Soup, Sweet & Pungent Walnuts, and the incredible Mock Eel, a long mushroom slice of heaven.
If that were all, it would be enough. But there's more. The hostess seats you, on time and with a smile. The waitress knows the dishes, knows the wines, knows the ingredients. The restaurant looks good, smells better. The gestalt is welcoming, delightful.

Ali-Baba's Kabob Shop
located on Main Street a couple doors up from the Flynn Theater, isn't much to look at. It’s small with only a few tables and stools scattered about and a counter along the back wall where you place your order. The décor consists of a large bulletin board that looks very much like what you’d see at a cafeteria up on Campus. To put it bluntly, Ali's Baba's doesn't have a real great atmosphere and isn't very clean (and that's being friendly).
That being said, the food is fantastic. It's a Greek/Mediterranean menu that (I'm told) doesn't worry about being traditional. Menu items include Falafels, Gyros, a range of different Vegetarian Pitas, Greek Salads, Sweet Potato Fries and more. But by far my favorite menu item is the Chicken (or Beef) Kabob - A Greek pita filled with steak or chicken, sautéed onions, green peppers, and mushrooms, then topped with tomatoes, lettuce, herb mayo and fresh salsa....

Church Street Tavern
is at 103 Church Street in
Burlington. In a town notorious for its wild college scene, you can find quiet and peace of mind at Church Street Tavern. The most notable aspects of this tavern are its chatty and overwhelmingly friendly patrons and bartenders, who bond together while watching rousing games of football or whatever sport might be in season -- though one patron describes Church Street as “a sports bar without being a sports bar.” While sports may serve only as an excuse to come to Church Street Tavern, it’s well worth the trip for the tavern’s traditional pub grub, such as hearty burgers with all the trimmings and thick, greasy fries. On “full swing” days -- say, during Sunday afternoon football games -- families have been known to grab a table or two and plant themselves for hours at a time.

Denny's is being Sued For Discrimination.
A trip to a Denny's Restaurant in South Burlington has ended with a lawsuit by two Chittenden County men.
The two say their dining experience was quite different than the other customers .. and they say the reason is .. because they're black.
"They felt that because of their race they were denied the same opportunity as the other customers to sit out front," says the Director of the Vermont Human Rights Commission Robert Appel. ... The human rights commission is suing the Denny's on behalf of the men. ... An attorney for Denny's says quite the opposite.
In a statement made to ABC22 news .. Attorney Craig Weatherly says.. quote .. The complaint is totally meritless and that's the way they will defend it at trial.
Weatherly also says the original charges of discrimination are quite different than those in the lawsuit.
Lawsuits have been filed throughout the country against Denny's, but the State Human Rights Commission says this is the first such type in Vermont.
Denny's Restaurant owner has been sued for discrimination
The court action comes six months after the commission made public its finding that a discriminatory incident took place at the
restaurant July 22, 2000. According to the lawsuit filed Friday in Washington County Superior Court, Keith Longmore and Davell Baker entered the Shelburne Road eatery after midnight and were directed to a table in a darkened section near a bucket and a mop -- even though tables were unoccupied in the main dining area. When the two men complained, they were told to accept the seating or leave. When they asked for a manager, they were told to go out to the parking lot. A manager spoke to them outside, but refused to move their seats. They left.
The new lawsuit involving Longmore charges the Denny's owner with a violation of the Vermont Fair Housing and Public Accommodation Act.

Eating at the Waterworks Restaurant became too challenging
for would-be diners when Winooski's massive urban renewal project landed like a sledge on the doorstep of the Champlain Mill.
Driveways that led to the restored mill changed almost daily. So, too, did parking areas for the building.
... He has put the restaurant, which overlooks the Winooski River, into semi-hibernation for the next year. Beginning Monday, the establishment will no longer serve lunch and dinner and instead only host private parties.
The switch puts about 50 full- and part-time employees out of work, Ely said. Some workers will be able to work a little by serving at company parties or wedding rehearsal dinners but it would only be for a handful of hours each week.
... Ely said construction halved his lunch time business and ate into dinner traffic by 40 percent.
Fu Da Chinese Restaurant,
formerly known as No. 1 Chinese, has moved a few doors down. You can't beat the hours -- it's open every night until late. Vegetarians can create their own veggie combos. No lunch on Sunday.
Unlike other commenters, when I go to a cheap Chinese take out place, I don't expect the Ritz. The food is cheap, made with fresh ingredients, and you can see them making it in the back from the counter. The dumplings are delicious and the curry is actually spicy. The lighting is florescent and there is minimal decor- but you leave without spending more than for an appetizer and an entree of generous portions.
Some review complained about the dining experience and a couple didn't like the food.

Halvorson's of 16 Church Street in Burlington leads a double life
. It's a family restaurant during the day, and it’s a blues and jazz club on Friday and Saturday nights.
Family -owned and -operated since 1979, Halvorson’s has an intimate, rustic décor dominated by dark woods and a handsome mahogany bar. The bar seats about 50 people inside; but a very popular, fully enclosed back deck doubles the seating capacity. (An awning and heaters have been added to make the ivy-covered back deck available for year-round seating). During warmer weather, Halvorson's adds outdoor seating out front on the street as well. The main bar and a small back bar serve seven local microbrews on tap. If you’re a wine connoisseur, Halvorson's has an extensive list of California wines.
The menu is moderately priced American cuisine (more than one local strongly recommends the black bean salad).
For meals during the week, the crowd at Halvorson's is slightly older, local and family-oriented.
Halvorson's Upstreet Café
has offered friendly service in a cozy and comfortable downtown setting since 1979. This American style bar and grill offers a full service menu from sandwiches to full course dinners, and features great California wines along with New England micro-brew beers. But make sure you start with one of the dozen appetizer selections, including chili, nachos, hot poppers or homemade fries or onion rings! There's live music on the weekends, and a spacious private outdoor courtyard for those warm summer days.
Hector’s
staff spend their time preparing their salsas and entrees from the finest, freshest ingredients available. The menu features dishes ranging from Tex-Mex traditional to eclectic offerings of the Mexican interior. House specialties include Toluca Tacos, Pureco en Adobo (beef), Chipotle Camarones (shrimp), and Steak Rancheros. Tex-Mex fare includes Grilled Chicken Fajitas Enchiladas, BBQ Chicken Breast Burritos, and Chili Rellenos. We also offer a wide range of vegetarian selections including lard-free beans and rice.
In the summertime, Sweetwaters' outdoor patio is standing room
only. There are two enclosed patios, but the open patio is the main draw. If you come on a Sunday, you can sit inside and listen to the Blues Brunch, featuring blues and jazz standards performed by vocalist Jenni Johnson. Friday night features local musicians -- mostly contemporary acoustic sounds, though the bill often includes jazz or a cappella. While margaritas are the most requested drink, Sweetwaters is known for its fruity rum concoction, Man Overboard. There are 14 beers on tap, 10 of which are from local microbreweries, including Trout River and Otter Creek. And while it's been voted a popular pickup joint in the past, the bar crowd here is a bit older than the college crowd found at many Burlington bars. Businesspeople and local politicians are likely to fill Sweetwaters' brass-and-fern decorated rooms at lunch -- but a younger crowd will often show up after 9pm.

La Carreta
of 1233 Shelburne Rd
South Burlington, is an authentic Mexican restaurant. In a market saturated by good Asian style restaurants, why can’t we have just one really good Mexican restaurant?
When I heard of La Carreta opening up I immediately had plans on trying it out as soon as possible. After a month or two of being open I finally tried it out. Not only did I try it out, believe it or not I ate dinner at La Carreta the last two nights.
My first impression of the restaurant was very favorable. A lot of work was put into renovating the building of which used to be Jake's. It’s fairly big, has a nice bar, and generally looks great inside.
As for the food goes, La Carreta offers your typical Mexican fare such as fajitas, burritios, tostados, tacos, tomalias, steaks, etc… The menu is pretty big, although much of it is just different combinations of the previously mentioned foods.
Leunig's Bistro
is at 115 Church Street. They have a jovial but subdued air of conversation or the early strums of the jazz guitarist that lured them inside moments later; a perfume of cream sauces, sweet sautés and French wine pouring from the rolled-up café doors. Or maybe the lazily turning ceiling fans, eclectic Parisian décor and casual black-and-white staff attire suggested they’d be just as comfortable in a Prada suit, sipping the house specialty French “75” -- champagne over ice, muddled sugar and lemon with a Courvoisier float -- as they would in shorts and t-shirts holding a locally brewed beer.
Leunig’s, a local favorite plopped in the touristy Church Street area, definitely gives off a certain “anything goes” vibe, but takes its menu, reputation and sense of local character very seriously. And this consistency has paid off, as evidenced by the very well-attended jazz nights on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
Leunig's Bistro,
of 115 Church Street, Seats 75 indoors and 45 outdoors on the Church Street Marketplace. ... They serve European bistro and specialize in shrimp sauteed with preserved lemons, garlic, fresh herbs, white wine and butter and served with herb risotto; sesame seed-crusted fillet of salmon grilled and served with soy-maple mustard glaze, roasted baby red potatoes and fresh vegetables; grilled, center-cut, marinated pork tournedos served with green peppercorn demi-glace and baked apples.
Main courses range from .95 to .50.

Whether you’re a spice lover or spice wimp you can find something on the menu to your liking. I’ve eaten here so many times I think I’ve tried everything and no complaints yet. The vegetable dumplings and sushi are great appetizers and the cucumber salad does a nice job of warming up your taste buds. There are a variety of different noodle dishes (cold and hot) ranging from the Peanut noodles, Pad Thai and Spicy Burmese Noodles to which you can add chicken, beef, tofu or shrimp. As for “specialties” (as the menu calls them) I would recommend the Pool Ko Ki or Bi Bim Pap. Nothing on |
