Rep. Bernie Sanders asked processors and supermarkets Monday to explain why milk gallons at the grocery store do not seem to be costing less even though farmers' checks have dropped by more than a third in the last year. Processors and supermarkets blamed each other as well as market factors, and argued that the milk price on grocery shelves has been going down. ... Last November, the average retail price of a gallon of milk was .19 in the Burlington area. That dropped to .08 a gallon in July, according to a survey done by a national group of state agriculture departments. Farmers are receiving 44 cents less per gallon. Sanders said part of the problem is a market controlled by only a few players. Sanders said he would push the federal government to crack down on what he called the monopoly of Dean Foods, which now controls about 75 percent of the milk market in New England.

Rockin' New Flavor at Ben & Jerry's Vermont's most famous ice cream company has taken a cue from the pop music world. Ben & Jerry's has announced a new flavor called "One Sweet Whirled," a play on a Dave Matthews Band song of the same name. The flavor is a blend of caramel and coffee ice creams, and includes marshmallow swirl and coffee-flavored fudge chips. Portions of the proceeds will benefit the popular rock band's charity and a global warming initiatives group. The ice cream makers hope their "duet" with the band will urge customers to do their best to fight global warming. The new flavor is available in most "scoop shops" now, and will be on grocery store shelves in February. -- end --

The department has put extra emphasis on 13 of the measures....These "critical" items must be corrected during the time of inspection.... Points are subtracted from a score of 100 for each failing noted by the inspector..... A restaurant must score above 70 and have all critical items corrected or the establishment will be asked to close. The Burlington Free Press keeps a running list of the most recent score for all restaurants, listed by town (or for all towns in Vermont). Click here to read more.
