A popular pub in downtown Burlington wants to expand into City Hall Park. Ri-Ra The Irish Pub would like to build a patio overlooking the park. It would be big enough to fit about 15 to 20 tables. The pub is collecting signatures from Burlington residents who like the idea. Eric Filkowski, who runs Ri-Ra, says the idea has support from the Church Street Marketplace and the Burlington Police Department; because they believe it may cut down on criminal activity in the park. ... It would be for dining only; lunch and dinner," says Filkowski. "When our dining room inside closes at night, we'd close the outside as well. We're not interested in creating a venue for late night drinking in the park and that type of thing." 1,800 people must sign the petition in order for the idea to be put on the March ballot. If it's approved, the City Council must still get permission from the Legislature. Ri-Ra has been criticized for this proposal in the past from those who think its wrong for businesses to profit off public spaces.

After 10 years of making and selling wine out of rented spaces, Shelburne Vineyard finally found its home. Ken and Gail Albert and partner Scott Prom realized a long-held dream this year when they opened a new tasting room and winery on U.S. 7. Flanked by acres of grapevines and conserved woods, Gail Albert said the new, green facility is the embodiment of the ideals on which the company has been built. The vineyard will maintain its three acres of vines at Meach Cove Trust and Shelburne Farms in addition to those planted outside the new facility, which also features a barrel room, office space and, of course, a small laboratory where the wines are carefully analyzed and tested. Bars fall behind on taxes At least eight Burlington bars are months behind on their city taxes. One watering hole, What Ale's You, has not paid tax on its alcohol and food earnings since 1999, according to city records. The city Clerk/Treasurer's Office relies on the bars to pay their monthly taxes and sends no warning note when those payments fall behind. City councilors met Tuesday to discuss how to hold bars more accountable. The city of Burlington committee that grants entertainment permits may withhold those permits from establishments that continue to be a problem. ... Burlington bars and restaurants must pay 1.5 percent tax on their food and alcohol receipts. About 150 businesses are subject to that tax, said Brendan Keleher, Burlington's chief administrative officer. Delinquents must pay penalties. Keleher checked the standing of establishments holding a cabaret license, which allows liquor and entertainment. He did not check the status of all 150 businesses subject to the tax.

Bikini contest leads to suspension of Hooters' liquor license. Thanks to a springtime bikini contest-- which Hooters' general manager acknowledges got "a little crazy"-- the South Burlington wings restaurant will not be able to sell alcohol during the Super Bowl on Sunday. The Vermont Department of Liquor Control cited Hooters Restaurant with five violations. The penalty: a liquor license suspension from Jan. 20 to Feb. 7. Jeff Lockwood, manager of the South Burlington Hooters, downplayed the effect the suspension would have on business and declined to speak specifically about Super Bowl Sunday, when the New York Giants attempt to upset the unbeaten New England Patriots. Bourbon Street Grill opened on Mardis Gras weekend in 1988, bringing a taste of old New Orleans to the Burlington area. It quickly established a reputation for authentic cajun cuisine, served with a healthy dose of southern hospitality. When you order your meal here, you are asked how spicy you want it prepared on a scale of 1-10. House specialties include traditional Louisiana jambalaya, cajun flank steak, and caesar salads topped with cajun chicken or cajun grilled shrimp. There is an interesting story about their startup at http://www.vermontguides.com/1997/profil20.htm.

Brown and Jenkins Trading Co. employees are always delighted to meet a fellow coffee lover. The love and passion for coffee is the motivating factor behind Brown & Jenkins. Over 15 years ago, in the fall of 1984 Ken Brown & Carol Jenkins started the fledgling Brown & Jenkins out of their home in Burlington, Vermont. They daringly purchased tiny ad spaces in magazines such as The New Yorker, Yankee and The Smithsonian, offering their coffee to the world. Then held their breath and waited... the orders came, and their dream of offering fresh-roasted Vermont gourmet coffee via mail order sprung to life. They roasted in the kitchen, ground coffee in the living room and shipped out of their basement for four months. They moved the growing Brown & Jenkins to Pine St., in Burlington. Ken & Carol toiled side by side for years, creating a beautiful catalog and continuing to build upon their dream. They moved Brown & Jenkins one last time to South Burlington, Vermont where it is still located today. Click here to read more.

Club Metronome is closed for month for violating state Liquor Control Board regulations nearly two years ago. The bar, on Main Street in Burlington, is shut down until Feb. 20. The violations include exceeding the bar's capacity, locking doors while patrons remained inside, allowing alcohol on the dance floor and serving multiple drinks to one person. Club Metronome appealed the penalties. The state Supreme Court upheld the Liquor Control Board's decision to suspend the bar's license. The violations occurred in March and June 2000.

Delinquent Taxes Could Cost Bars Licenses Burlington bars could soon have another hurdle to clear when renewing their entertainment permits. Bars, restaurants, hotels and some other businesses in Burlington pay a 1% gross receipts tax to the city. Some bars have fallen behind on their payments, and a city council committee is considering whether full payment of those taxes should be a condition for obtaining an entertainment permit. ... The issue came to light after one local bar owner fell two years behind in gross receipts payments. City officials later determined that a total of eight bars owe some amount of back taxes. The city won't say exactly how much money is owed, but based on general figures provided by the city and bar owners, the total appears to be less than ,000. That's out of a city budget of roughly million.

Finnigan's Pub is a warm, homey interior highlights a fine collection of antique Irish and sports memorabilia and snapshots of smiling regulars, pints in hand. But if you’re looking to join Burlington’s harried rush of squealing college students, forget about coming here. As a true Irish pub, Finnigan’s caters to an older, no- frills crowd that comes here to relax and mull over politics or the goings-on in the sports world. Others come here alone to down a pint or two and play pool or pinball. Like visiting the home of an old friend, locals and some tourists find respite and a good stiff drink at Finnigan’s. “It’s the Cheers of Burlington,” says one Finnigan’s bartender. Take a seat at the bar or sit at one of the bar's several tables, and take advantage of daily drink specials. Wednesday nights feature .50 Vermont micropints, and every other Saturday there’s live music from the Highland Weavers. --C. S. Oh

Hector's is at 1 Lawson Lane in Burlington. Although this place doesn’t have music by local or national acts like some of its nearby competitors, Hectors has the longest running open mike night in town. For seven years, Thursday nights have been devoted to local musicians, sometimes as many as 14 acts per evening. The majority of performers play acoustic guitar or keyboards, and the music ranges from soft rock to folk and blues. This restaurant/bar is easy to miss because it’s tucked away in the basement of a huge office building; but as soon as you walk in the door, you might as well be in Guadalajara. You’ll see Mexican paraphernalia everywhere: masks, sombreros, giant chili pepper wreaths and Mexican blankets hanging on the bright blue and yellow walls. There's Mexican mariachi-style music on the radio, and a 150-gallon fish tank with large tropical fish adds to the south-of-the-border feel.

Higher Ground is a live music venue in Winooski that hosts more than 300 concerts a year by artists ranging from Leo Kottke to Toots & the Maytals. Higher Ground opened in 1998 to fill a void in the northern Vermont market. The four owners wanted to open a facility that was as friendly toward the artists playing the stage as it was to the patrons coming to see them. Unobstructed sightlines, high ceilings, large stage, state-of-the-art sound system, full kitchen, free parking, easy interstate access these were the facets the owners wanted to incorporate into a live music facility. Clientele ranges from students to grandparents they can't be pinned down except to say they all love music. Click here to read more.

in-house roasting process make Uncommon Grounds' coffee stand out from the rest. "We roast the best arabica beans that we can find daily," he says, "and every drop of water is filtered twice before it even touches the grounds. The difference between fresh and not freshly roasted coffee is noticeable." Blakely had decided to own a coffee shop three years before Uncommon Grounds opened its doors. He did extensive research into the coffee business and his potential customer base before deciding on Burlington. He chose the Queen City because of the number of colleges and year-round residents. Uncommon Grounds also sells coffee wholesale and through mail-order. Together they account for 20 percent of the company's revenue. "We mail our coffee all over the world," he says. "We do our wholesale differently. We sell coffee only, not equipment, and we don't try to compete with distributors. We develop specific blends for mostly local restaurants." JP's Pub, of 139 Main Street, has been A Burlington fixture for 20 years, JP’s attracts a steady crowd of locals, college students during the school year and out-of-towners during the summer and ski season. A small place with a capacity of 165, JP's also has become known as the place to go in Burlington for karaoke. Originally karaoke was just one night a week, but it became so popular that you can now belt your heart out on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights. JP's also has live music, often folk and some rock on Tuesdays and reggae on Thursdays. JP’s has a full bar in the front and a small half-bar in the back, with a variety of local and national beers on tap. Lee Anderson started the Radio Bean Coffee House in Burlington's Old North End for what he calls "the people motive, not the profit motive. I want Radio Bean to become a podium for the community," he says about the business, which opened in November 2000. ... The coffee served at Radio Bean fits into Anderson's social agenda. The shop serves only organic fair-trade coffee that is grown on an indigenous Mayan farming co-op in Mexico. Anderson says that although it is more expensive, the quality and virtue make it worthwhile. Radio Bean serves mostly people who live in the Old North End. Anderson estimates that the demographics of his clientele closely resemble those of the Burlington population. He claims the cafe is also a destination for some patrons who come for the frequent live music performances, poetry readings or independent film screenings. Click here to read more.

Muddy Waters is just a few steps from the city's downtown pedestrian marketplace, and that's exactly what owners Carrie and Mark MacKillop wanted when they opened the store in May 1994. "We spent a lot of time looking for the right space," Carrie says. "We wanted someplace that was off the main drag where locals could find us and so could tourists if they wanted to. And we save quite a bit of money on rent by being off Church Street." For the MacKillops, creating an atmosphere where people would feel comfortable was the most important consideration. "For us, it's not about glorifying the bean but creating a community venue where people can meet and hang out," she says. Coffee and specialty drinks are just one piece of Muddy Waters' business. The shop also sells beer, wine, pastries and food from local vendors. "Anything we can we buy locally," Carrie says. Click here to read more.

Muddy Waters has been hailed as Among the Country's Best. Funny how the best-kept secrets never stay that way. From the outside, it seems that someone was at least trying to keep Muddy Waters a murky mystery. There's not much in the way of signage. But USA Today found out about the place earlier this month, and called it, in a word, great. The paper says Muddy Waters is one of the 10 great places in America for caffeine and conversation. ... USA Today praised Muddy Waters for its "offbeat and cozy" atmosphere, with its wood walls, post-and-beam flair, and tin ceilings. But for the regulars, it's all about the quality of the no-frills coffee. "It's strong," said Laurie Farrington. "I like strong coffee. Muddy Waters has the best coffee." "Whenever I get a cup of coffee here, I can't see anything but black, which is kind of the element of a good cup of coffee to me," said Amor Kohli, a self-described regular who visits four to five times a week. "The walls are great. The music is great. People here are really friendly.

Nectar's restaurant is Temporarily Closed The dumpster showed up outside Nectar's Monday morning and in just a matter of minutes, it was close to full. Workers had spent hours ripping apart the restaurant. Brink bought the Burlington landmark more than five years ago and had been hoping to renovate since then. But the business's founder, Nectar Rorris, still owned the building. The two didn't agree on plans. This year Rorris sold to another landlord-- so it was full steam ahead for the changes. The upgrades include new sprinklers, new bathrooms, more seating, more modern comforts. What won't change, the owners promise, is the laid-back atmosphere. It's still all about live music here... after all, this venue did help launch Vermont's most famous musical export, Phish. And while a revamped menu will showcase barbecue, the famous gravy fries will stay. Nectar's will keep its bar open during the restaurant's makeover... planning to unveil the results by the end of next week. Click here to read more.

Red Square Bar and Grill is a 136 Church Street. When popular jazz clubs Sneakers, Lost Elm and Rio closed in 1997, the local jazz crowd migrated to Red Square. It's now recognized as one of the best places in Burlington to catch free live music every night but Sunday. Red Square primarily attracts a mature and -- relative to Burlington -- cosmopolitan clientele. It's of the few bars in town where you can order a martini without receiving a smirk from the bartender. The bright and airy space is dominated by copper walls, and the main room features a wall of windows. You can also check out the work of local artists, whose works are exhibited in Red Square’s unofficial art gallery. The menu is primarily light fare, like salads, soups and wraps. Seafood is one of Red Square's specialties, and both the fried calamari and fresh cashew burger are recommended.

Ri-Ra Irish Pub is at 123 Church Street in Burlington. Ri-Ra, roughly translated from Gaelic, means “good times,” and this club aims to provide the same kind of good time you’d expect from an underground Irish pub in Dublin. In fact, Ri-Ra was rebuilt and decorated from fixtures dismantled and shipped over from an actual Irish pub and a schoolhouse. The pub has the usual suspects on tap -- Bass, Guinness, Harp, etc. -- and the menu even features a Guinness fettuccini made locally just for the bar. There are also small semi-private booth areas called "snugs," -- traditional to Irish pubs -- where groups of four can gather for a drink or a meal. There’s a dance floor here and a DJ on Fridays. Tuesday night is the popular pub quiz -- around 8:45pm, pub and dining patrons gather in teams of up to six people and play a sort of team Trivia until around 11pm. Click here to read more.

Ruben James Inexpensive pub-type restaurant/bar at 159 Main Street in Burlington, Vermont. The chefmoz.org dining guide describes the place as "When I think of RJ's, I think of one thing: WINGS. If you catch them at the right time, RJ's has what might just be the best hot wings in town, and between 5 and 9 PM you can get them for 15 cents apiece (and for free on the weekend.) However, RJ's has a lot more to offer the hungry diner than just chicken wings. They have a quite large selection of burgers and chicken sandwiches on the menu, as well as salads and veggie burgers. Everything I've eaten at RJ's has been tasty, no-muss-no-fuss (no complaints) bar fare. The interior of RJ's is very spacious and bar-like; it is much larger than it looks from the outside. Being a sports bar, there are TVs visible from just about every seat. RJ's strongest positive factor is the price of its food. Click here to read more.

Ruben James is at 159 Main Street in Burlington. DJs draw big crowds on weekends and Wednesdays, but those in the know show up for Tuesday’s dancehall: “the good stuff, not the drugged-out reggae,” one young bartender assured. Flex Records DJs are the main attraction Tuesday nights, though the Bud and Labatt drafts or microbrew specials appeal too. There’s a deal to be had every night, which would explain the big groups of frat guys and other collegiates there for free pool, .50 pint-sized Long Island iced teas or free buffalo wings; and, during Friday happy hours, live classic rock by guitarist Perry Nunn. Wednesday nights mean cheap drinks for females. Anyone on a budget should consider dinner here -- there are always several dinner specials from the “better than bar food” menu of burgers, “mexicantina” platters, pastas and salads. --Kiersten Aschauer Click here to read more.

Selection Unlimited, a specialty beverage company that maintains 16,000 accounts throughout the United States and Canada. ... More to the point, DWS is in the distribution business, which it has imporved on by developing new products to distribute. Selection Unlimited specializes in selling instant cappuccino and real fruit and coffee semi-frozen smoothies through small, independent convenience stores, as well as national convenience store chains. “It’s not authentic cappuccino from Italy that’s made in a ,000-to-,000-machine with real milk foam on the top,” Lashway concedes. Selection Cappuccino, which comes in 10 flavors, is a powdered blend of coffee, non-dairy creamer and sugar mixed with hot water and flavorings. “It’s more like flavored hot cocoa than it is real cappuccino.” The 36-year-old president adds that the company’s smoothies aren’t whipped up fresh in a blender, either. Sh-na-na's will be closed for two weekends as punishment following a sidewalk fist fight. City police filed a complaint against Sh-na-na's Bar last fall after two women patrons had a fist fight in front of the bar. City Council members recommended a two weekend liquor license suspension citing numerous prior problems at Sh-na-na's. Monday night the council voted on the issue after Sh-na-na's lawyer charged that the bar was being treated unfairly. The unanimous vote means that Sh-na-na's will be closed for the next two weekends. However, Sh-na-na's lawyer says the owners may try to get a court order to halt the suspension pending an appeal. Click here to read more.

Speeder & Earl's, which got its name from the lyrics of a 1950s song by the Cadillacs "They often call me Speedo, but my real name is Mr. Earl" opened two stores in June 1993. The main store, on Pine Street, is owned by Jeannie Kail, one of the company's founders. The second location, a walk-in store on Church Street, was sold in 1997, but still sells Speeder & Earl's coffee exclusively. Kail says when she and her then-husband, Gordon Blankenburg, moved to Burlington in 1992, they noticed a lack of quality coffee in the area. "In particular, there was no quality small-batch roastery. ... We do about 50 percent retail and 50 percent wholesale," she says. Speeder & Earl's supplies coffee to a few New England colleges and is working on an arrangement with the University of Vermont. Kail says the quality of their beans and their small-batch roasting process make for a superior coffee. The beans are supplied by a distributor from New York who personally selects the beans from farms around the world.

Speeder and Earls's Coffee supplies their franchises with the world’s finest small estate coffees. They coffees are unique, limited supply coffees, not commercial grade coffees that all vendors have in ready supply. They have customers who brag about driving miles out of their way to get to us because they can only drink Speeder & Earl's coffee. They have some of the best award winning coffee offered to anyone, anywhere. They treat their coffee like fresh pastry. If you order on Tuesday, it’s roasted on Theydnesday. They only buy coffee of unique character and quality, similar to an estate bottled wine program. Click here to read more.

Splash at the Boathouse! has a menu that is limited and a little overpriced. For comparison, an order of chicken fingers at Church St. Tavern runs about .75, at Splash you'll pay about .75. So you're paying a little extra for the view but it is spectacular. All I had was an order of wings and they were quite good. The service was great. Our waitress was right there to offer us another beer before we were finished with the one we were drinking and the wings were served up quickly. Also worth mentioning is that if you get sea sick easily you might want to think about going somewhere else if the lake is real choppy as the whole thing is on a floating dock which can bob up and down noticeable. On a calm day you probably wouldn't even know it was floating.

The state Health Department inspection program rates restaurants on 44 measures of food handling and housekeeping. The department has put extra emphasis on 13 of the measures....These "critical" items must be corrected during the time of inspection.... Points are subtracted from a score of 100 for each failing noted by the inspector..... A restaurant must score above 70 and have all critical items corrected or the establishment will be asked to close. The Burlington Free Press keeps a running list of the most recent score for all restaurants, listed by town (or for all towns in Vermont). Click here to read more.

Vermont Pub and Brewery is at 144 College Street in Burlington. When Greg and Nancy Noonan opened the first microbrewery in Vermont in 1988, microbrews were cutting edge. Since then, Greg has become internationally known as a brew master. At this pub, you can try about a dozen different kinds of beer and ale, including Handsome Mick’s Irish Stout, a rich, robust drink; Dogbite Bitter, a big, chewy E.S.B. (Extra Special Bitter) with a fierce hops bite; and Wee Heavy Scotch Ale, a smooth, syrupy ale brewed in 1998. The brew masters also make their own fruit seltzers, and the bar offers one of the largest selections of single-malt Scotch in Vermont. The atmosphere here is casual and friendly, with a décor similar to that of an Irish pub. Dark oak makes up most of the interior, along with old tile floors and marble tabletops. The lighting is dim, with a few romantic corners; and the huge bar is divided, with one side situated in a 35- seat greenhouse. Click here to read more.

What Ale's You, of 152 St. Paul St in downtown Burlington, is considered a Small pub that plays good music. Does not fill up till later in the night after the house parties have died down from UVM. Great place for college students to hang out and drink Magic Hat. This is my favorite bar to visit in Burlington. I always stop at What Ale's You. Click here to read more.
