Flynn Theatre
was built in 1930 by Burlington businessman John J. Flynn as the city's newest and largest "entertainment palace." Originally designed for vaudeville -- with the largest proscenium in the state, a sophisticated fly system, sloped floor seating, good acoustics, and central downtown location -- the theatre's focus shifted quickly to film as "talkies" became the rage.
The Flynn operated as a movie theatre for almost 50 years. In the early 1970s, Lyric Theatre – Burlington's community theater group – rediscovered the Flynn's live theater capacity and used it for their own performances. Later, Lyric members helped spearhead a group of interested citizens who raised money to purchase the Flynn and create a live performing arts center. The theatre reopened in 1981.

A Controversial Play Took Centerstage.
The dialogue is blunt and at times what some would call crass... The Vagina Monologues has become a popular production around the country and is running this weekend at the University of Vermont.
... The show is performed at many places on Valentine's Day as a way to raise money to prevent domestic violence. All the proceeds from the shows at UVM will go to the Women's Rape Crisis Center and Women Helping Battered Women. Annual Pomerleau Party Draws A Crowd
Every year at this time, hundreds of kids and their families get treated to a big party in downtown Burlington.
It was the 28th Pomerleau Family Holiday Party at the Hilton hotel. Over five-hundred people from the Burlington area came by special invitation to enjoy a first class day of fun. The affair includes a dinner, live entertainment and "Mr. & Mrs. Santa."
Tony Pomerleau told Channel 3 it's part of his many efforts to give back to the community. "I came up the hard way," he said. "And I think it's nice for the kids. I've been very fortunate, as you know. So it's kind of a pleasure."
Awareness Theater Company
Company is a theatrical group composed of people with and without disabilities. The mission of this theater is to create good theatrical pieces that highlight the skills and issues of the members of this company. Our company consists of a director, an assistant director, and five members who receive services from Howard Community Services in Burlington, Vermont.
Our company was formed in 1998 when Vermont Protection and Advocacy (V,P and A) included us in a three year grant that addresses the high incidence of abuse that people with developmental disabilities face in our society. We were asked to create a theater group and a theater piece dealing with this issue. We spent the first year developing our company and the show, Speaking for Ourselves, the second year we performed the show with the Vermont Peer Support Network (now known as The Green Mountain Self-Advocates) as part of a training for people with developmental disbilities on respect and abuse.
Burlington musicians have to pay to play.
Walking on Church Street in downtown Burlington, one hears and sees many things that make Church Street what it is. The smell of the countless restaurants, the warm smiling faces of the college students walking by and the music that fills the air. The musicians who play that music have more to them than meets the eye.
For many years, the Church Street Marketplace has regulated musicians by enforcing a rule that only those with permits are allowed to play to the public. This permit includes many rules and regulations, not only creating a positive place for the public to enjoy, but also giving the musicians a safe environment to play in, according to the Church Street Marketplace Web site.
Some of the regulations include how many musicians can be on Church Street at once, how long each musician can play on a block per week, and when they are allowed to play.
The fees for the permit range from a one-day playing pass to a weekend pass.

Movie prices are dropping in the Burlington area.
Ann Morris ... a Winooski ... was waiting in line Sunday afternoon at the Hoyts Nickelodeon 6 in downtown Burlington for the 3:15 showing of "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring." The matinee price was just right for Morris.
Morris and film fans like her are the benefactors of a mini-price war that began when an independently owned theater opened in October in Essex. That started a chain reaction that saw the international chain that monopolized Chittenden County's theaters drop its admission prices.
Hoyts Showcase 5, which had been one of the county's three first-run movie theaters, is offering second-run films for an admission price of . The cinema on Williston Road in South Burlington joins Ethan Allen Cinema in the New North End of Burlington as the only theaters in the county showing new-but-not-brand-new films at a cut rate. Weekend matinees at Ethan Allen cost , less than a box of Junior Mints.

Music Contact International is the expertise behind trips
sponsored by nonprofits such as the Flynn Theatre and Vermont Public Radio. Sherri Rigby (left) and Theri Davis are assistant tour coordinators.
It's hard to believe McDonald's Germany would have anything in common with The American Morgan Horse Institute, but it does. Music Contact International organized custom travel tours for both groups, along with 700 other diverse organizations that run the gamut from soybean scientists to Bible Belt choirs. The tour for McDonald's top brass included visits to Idaho and Washington state in search of researchers developing "brick- shaped, blemish-free" potatoes. For members of The American Morgan Horse Institute on the other hand, the trip was a horse lover's dream come true that included seats at the Royal Windsor Horse Show and a private audience with the "studs in residence" at the Queen's Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace.

Strangefolk
Originally formed as an acoustic duo "Strange Folk" in 1991, Strangefolk (now one word) added bass and drums within a year and took to playing the bars in and around the vibrant musical community of Burlington, Vermont. In the years that followed, Strangefolk went on to build a national grassroots following based on the strength of three studio CD releases ... At the heart of Strangefolk's songwriting is a seamless blend of narrative lyrical content and inventive melody. Rock, folk, blues and bluegrass influences converge to create an instantly recognizable sound, which keeps Strangefolk's listeners moving from start to finish. When punctuated with Strangefolk's trademark three-part harmonies and soaring lead guitars, the band's unique songwriting ability develops a natural avenue for the band to extend themselves in the live setting. The result is one of the more gratifying live music experiences around.

Two cities are competing for a Higher Ground.
After a final concert featuring a guest appearance by Phish frontman Trey Anastasio, Higher Ground sits empty. The nightclub closed to make way for Winooski's redevelopment project. Now its owners are looking to relocate.
One possible site; the burned-out Sh-na-nas building in downtown Burlington. The historic structure gutted by fire would be restored and its exterior preserved.
Higher Ground is seeking approval from the Burlington Development Review Board for bi-level concerts at the vacant building. It could hold as many as 900 patrons-- nearly double the number at its Winooski location.
But if not Burlington, then maybe in South Burlington. Higher Ground could move to the Cinema 5 on Williston Road. The South Burlington Review Board has given the green light to a plan that would turn the theater into a concert facility able to hold 1,000 people. And Higher Ground has requested a liquor license application.
Vermont is one of the few states that does not have a state
inspection program (for carnival rides). At least 40 states require state inspections of mobile amusement rides, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. In Vermont, fairs must register with the Secretary of State's Office and post a million insurance bond as collateral against serious accidents.
The commission estimates that, nationally, about 10,600 injuries due to amusement rides were treated at emergency rooms in 2000. The report does not list the numbers by state. Vermont does not keep its own tally of ride accidents.
At least one state legislator would like to see Vermont's inspection system change. The fair operator and the ride company say the system is working fine as is. The rides are double and triple checked, they said. The last thing they want is for someone to be injured.

In concert, the Vermont-based group draws on a wide variety of musical experience and expression. The Vermont based group tours the country offering a mixture of lively folk, Celtic music, sea shanties, bluegrass, and dry New England humor. The award winning band has been featured at Lincoln Center, The Chautauqua Institute, and on National Public Radio. Because of their busy schedule, they've been labeled "Vermont's hardest working folk group" by both the Burlington Free Press and Vermont Public Radio.
